There are an estimated 500.000 species of chalcids worldwide. Perilampus nitens is a new, 2017 by Prof. Dr. Lars Krogmann discovered species in Baden- Württemberg, that inhabits various biotopes outside of closed forests.
The 3-5mm large chalcid is characterized by unusual mouthparts: the jaws are not fixed but can be moved in all directions. These precision tools make it easier to parasite the host insects and thus bring an enormous evolutionary advantage.
