Widely distributed throughout Europe, but avoids the extreme north.
From April, can often be found at the edges of woodland, in copses and on the warm overhanging branches of bushes.
These cicadas are 4 to 5 mm long and their front wings are very variable in colour. There are dark spots on the veins of their wings which are covered with hairs.
The cicada sucks at plant roots with its proboscis, which is folded under its body when resting.
