The meadow grasshopper is probably the most common grasshopper in Germany. You can find them from June to October in meadows, in damp habitats and also on dry grassland, waysides and in fenlands.
The grasshopper is 13 to 23 mm in size and can be very variable in colour. The basic colour varies between green, brown, yellowish and reddish. There are even variegated ones.
Chorthippus parallelus feeds on plants and is one of the last species of grasshopper that can survive in overfertilised rich pasture.
